The trend towards living a healthier lifestyle has taken over in recent years, with 1 in 7 of the UK population now belonging to a gym. This is equal to 14.9% of the population and is the highest it’s ever been, according to the 2017 State of the UK Fitness Industry Report. But, living a healthier life isn’t just about running endless miles on a treadmill or busting a blood vessel trying to squat double your bodyweight; simply walking is fantastic exercise for:

  • maintaining weight and controlling blood sugar
  • improving mood by releasing happiness hormones (dopamine, serotonin and endorphins)
  • decreasing the risk of cardiac events such as angina, heart attack, bypass surgery, heart failure
  • strengthening bones and muscles
  • best of all, it’s an exercise you can do anywhere!

A study by the Stroke Association has shown that a brisk, regular walk of 20-30 minutes per day has been proven to reduce the risk of a stroke by up to 27%, while 2 recent studies presented at the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) conference in Chicago USA, suggest that walking could even be beneficial in the fight against cancer. The first study showed that women who walk for 25 minutes per day after being diagnosed with breast cancer were only 50% as likely to die from the disease as those who didn’t, over an eight year period. The second study had similar results, this time for people with bowel cancer. That’s impressive.

So, walking is the best thing for you since sliced (wholemeal) bread. But… could you make your walks even more beneficial and enjoyable? What happens if you throw a pooch in to the mix? Well there’s a reason that they’re known as Man’s Best Friend. A study by BUPA found that just being around a dog can decrease our stress levels by lowering the amount of cortisol (a stress hormone) we produce, and BBC’s Holding Back the Years reported that dog owners even visit the doctor 20% less than those who don’t. Being outside in nature has also been shown to improve peoples’ sense of wellbeing, with some doctors now preferring to prescribe ‘green therapy’ over traditional medicine as a way of treating depression. That means the simple activity of dog walking delivers a really positive raft of health benefits, mental and physical.

That’s all well and good, but what if you don’t have a dog? What if working long days and hours makes it impossible to own a dog? You could borrow one. Or better yet, get paid to borrow one! Another recent (and growing) trend is working from home with pet care franchises, where franchisees not only get to be outdoors with our canine friends reaping all those lovely health benefits, but they get paid to do it.
