Life after teaching

Life after teaching

You invest so much time into one career path and when that chosen vocation lets you down what do you do? What can you do?

Is there an opportunity for a working life you enjoy if you’ve only ever worked in one sector?

Meet Sarah Davies, owner of We Love Pets Blackwood. She was a teacher for 17 years before she made the incredibly brave decision to resign and find a healthier way of life.

Find out more about her journey in this candid article, we know it’ll resonate with many.

When I was a teenager I worked as a play leader in the local leisure centres. I always enjoyed leading activities for children and I realised that teaching could be a suitable career choice for me. My mother was also a Primary School teacher, so I had an insight into teaching.

I completed a BSc Hons Degree in Applied Biology in Cardiff University in 1996 and I then went on to complete a PGCE Primary in Caerleon in 1997, on completion of my PGCE I then started my first teaching job in a small primary school in September 1997.

I taught for 17 years. That’s a long time.

I loved every minute of teaching; the children, parents and staff were all amazing. It was a small school set on the side of a valley and everyone there made me feel very welcome from day one, and I felt very comfortable in my new job.

I felt appreciated and respected and both the children and I were happy.

Unfortunately, the school was too small and closed down in 2014 and things changed dramatically when I moved to a new primary school.

The last two years of my teaching career were awful. The work environment became extremely unpleasant and resulted in me becoming very ill with work related stress. Stress can bring on so many symptoms.

I suffered from hair loss, my weight plummeted and my confidence took a massive dive. Family members had noticed a change in my personality too.

In 2019, after 21 years of teaching I handed my notice of resignation in, it was a difficult decision as it had been my life for so long and I’d committed so much to my training throughout my career.

But, my health was much more important.

When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a vet and have always had an enormous love for all animals and I have had many pets.

I had initially started considering a change of career around two years before I resigned. It was time to consider me and look for something I could enjoy again.

I started looking at pet businesses and dog walking services in my area. I contacted Ryan, Franchise Director, in October 2018 and arranged a meeting with him.

I have not looked back since!

Ryan was amazing and I wanted to start straight away, We Love Pets was everything I was looking for in a business and more.

I am very excited that I am now a business owner at the age of 45, the training and support from We Love Pets has been amazing and I completed my training along with four other new franchisees at the beginning of the year, so we all got to meet.

Jo, We Love Pets founder, and Ryan have both been amazing and they have both said that I will be amazing and the customers will love me. The other franchises have given me lots of advice and tips and I hope to meet up with the three Welsh franchisees shortly.

My vision for my business is to be the number one dog walking and pet sitting company in my area – it’s so incredibly exciting to have new goals and the support of the We Love Pets team behind me all the way. I know I will achieve it; by providing the best care possible for pets, provide a top quality service, building strong relationships with customers and staff, be professional at all times, punctual and consistent and ensure the wellbeing of employees, customers and pets.

I am also hoping to take on another area in the future with the possibility of my husband, Paul, coming on board!

Outside of work I am a very busy active person, I have three children which keeps me on my toes and I am a member of Islwyn running club and I enjoy taking part in many races, I just achieved the best newcomer award with the club. I also love the outdoors and I enjoy countryside walks with my dog.

After launching in last month I have not looked back, already the business is growing very rapidly and I am in the process of employing my first two members of staff! I just wish I had done this sooner.

I feel like a new person

I am so happy. My family have noticed a massive change in me for the better, I now have a positive outlook on life and it’s all thanks to We Love Pets.
